Just as a tidbit of the natural order of life.

Things that reproduce in great numbers do so for a reason...

To increase the odds that enough of the progeny will make it to sexual maturity to reproduce and continue the genetic material, in an oftentimes harsh world.

In cases like this, high mortality rates are common. Low mortality rates are rare.
