Sphag and Bag with S/H
Default Sphag and Bag with S/H

My brother gave me a cattleya with three new growths on it and new roots. Since I have transfered all my orchids to S/H with no problems I repoted this plant in S/H. Because of my stupidity the roots all died. I am left with a rootless plant. My question is has anyone tried to use the sphag and bag method with the plant in the S/H media. I went to rays website and that is where I got the idea from, however I just want to know if anyone has done it. If so, do you put water in the bottom of the pot so there is wicking action and the plant roots are used to the high water conditions once they begin growing? Any advice would help. Thanks. Oh and I presoaked the plant in a KLN solution to promote new root growth.

I personally have not had any success with sphag-n-bag. I apparently don't watch it close enough and I get a mass of mold. It's easier for me to root in water culture.
For myif you are going to do s/h with a bag, you are basically giving the plant more humidity so just put the potted plant with water in the bottom of the pot, in a plastic bag or under a bell jar.

Sphag-n-bag is merely a technique that is used to maximize the humidity around the plant, in hopes that it will not desiccate before growing new roots. It's use is totally independent from how you want to grow the plant, so if that's S/H culture, go for it.

I would also suggest putting the pot on a heating mat or keeping it in a very warm environment while it recovers.

I agree with Joann.

My best success has been with water culture until the roots form then move it into S/H.
