Ok, I have decided to tread a little carefully here, and not go crazy until I have tried it out experimentally.
Not that I doubt the process in any way, it's done on a huge scale in all kinds of places. Disney for example grows all their own fruits and vegetables in a lab hydroponically, so clearly 'simple flowers' for a hobby isn't a big deal.
I took some 32 ox. fruit fly cups, drilled 2, 1/4" holes, 1 inch up from the bottom in the sides of the cups.
I then took a couple of small bromeliads, but ones that were almost root bound in their current pots, rinsed well to move the dirt, then dangled them in the cups, gently pouring in hydroton and shaking the cup as I filled it to distribute the clay pellets around the roots.
Watered well, and placed in my greenhouse.
I use old aquarium water, meaning the stuff I drain from the tanks with fish doo doo in it as fertilizer (works amazingly well btw)
I also took a couple of pup cuttings, new growth and lacking root structure yet, and did the same for them.
I now have several experimental plants started, we shall see how they do.
I have several hundreds of cattleya, laelia, Doritis etc. that I might want to pot this way.
Only issue is 32oz cups take up a huge amount of space. I guess I need to get my hands on some 16oz cups and see if those might be better......
