I always believed this to be true, though was unsure. THanks for sharing this!!

You are most welcome! I have a quick question re S/H
Do you keep the container's bottom sitting in water just up over the holes? so that water is kept at that level? I guess I'll have to find a site that explains this process.

I keep the water level inside the pot just below the hole or at the hole. I add more when it dries out.
Frankly, I wish they had more holes than the two standard ones.
I don't keep the containers sitting in water at all.

Do most people use the clay pellets?

I think so. They go under many different names. Hydroton, Leca, Prime Agra.... Each is a little bit different, but to me personally they are all the same. I was going to experiment with gravel for S/H as I have a strong suspision it would do the same job. Only heavier.

Check out Ray's most excellent website. It will answer a lot of your questions about how it works and why.

BTW, thanks Ray!

Gravel? Will the water go up from reservoir to the roots? I thought you need something that can conduct water from bottom to the top.

What about seedlings? Yesterday I took most of my seedlings out of the Aussie Gold Orchid Mix that they were in because the white fungus that was growing at the top of the potting medium was also growing at the bottom of the drain holes. So I decided to not mess with it anymore and I had some medium bark mixture on hand so that is what the seedlings got repotted in yesterday evening. I know I am not supposed to water in the evening or repot, but that is the only time I had. And I am also aware that the seedlings should be in a fine mixture, but the medium is all I had! As soon as I get some time I plan on ordering some PrimeAgra and pots to transfer my seedlings too and then I can finaly stop messing with them!
