Vriesea splendens in SH

Plant is over 2 feet across and nearly perfect, in spite of having endured humidity levels lower than 40% in winter in the house. Pup grew next to spent flower spike deep in the cup on a small plant found on a sale table.

As an experiment the plant was placed in water culture 3 years ago to clean up messy old roots and start new roots before placing in SH in a recycled 24 ounce soda cup where it still remains. Pup was never removed from mother plant and was so tightly attached it was hard to distinguish the 2. Old leaves were simply pulled off from the bottom as they became senile and filled up with new leca to cover exposed stem.

Most bromeliads I tried in SH have grew and bloomed well and seem to tolerate neglect and low humidity provided I flush well periodically. I use about 60-100 ppm Nitrogen solution and aim to flush/fill at least once per week.
