Potinaria Hoku Gem with wrinkled leaves Male
Default Potinaria Hoku Gem with wrinkled leaves

I put this plant in semi-hydroponics in August. It promptly shot out 5 new shoots in the first 2 months and was doing well until a month ago. It began to get wrinkled leaves. Some of the old pseudobulbs are wrinkled and the leaves cracked, which I can understand. But all of the leaves are wrinkled now.

It has never been without water, getting fully watered & fed at least once a week, topped up at least mid week. It gets the same care as all my other orchids, which are all in s/h and doing well (phals, onc, mitloniopsis, paphs)

Any ideas about what to do? Does this mean it is not meant for s/h (altho it sprang to life when first put in s/h)? My thought is to remove it from s/h and put it back in bark

I would take it out of the pot and check the roots. It looks like the plant is not getting any moisture. Did it have new roots showing when you put it in the SH?

You hit the nail on the head !!! I pulled it out and there are many old dead roots and a few new ones. I trimmed it up and repotted making sure it is deep enough. The long root gets down to just above the reservoir.

Wish me luck. I just added the pix, and I took the repotted picture before I watered it

If it put out 5 new growths, the roots that came from them should have been well-tailored to the environment, and should not have died like that. Something must have changed to cause them to succumb. Did it get cold near a window, perhaps?

I have the same orchid and you maybe won't believe, but it happens to mine exactly like you said it happened to yours and it has the same wrinkle leaves. It is just like looking at mine!.I keep mine in bark mixed with coconut husk and perlite so I don't think it is a medium or in your case s/h.I think it doesn't like to be repotted.I repotted mine like a few months ago and before I repotted was doing fine.I hope it survives because I like those flowers a lot.Wishing you the same.
