There is a recent thread in the beginner forum about keeping algae down in the humidity (drip) tray. Some one mentioned putting copper wire or a penny in the tray to keep down the algae.

Would this work in the individual pots, i.e., to place a penny in the bottom of the s/h pot to keep the algae down? Would the copper harm the plant?

I know that the algae is not harmful, but since I keep my plants in the house, it the aesthetics I am thinking about.

It would reduce the amount of algae at the bottom of the pot where the water sits yes,But from my experiences algae tends to grow on the sides farther up the pot.So the copper would not help around that area...Plus the plants benefit from some algae i do believe.... I came up with this idea (using copper wire in humidity trays to reduce algae) cause i am a contractor that sometimes, i have used copper strips on roof tops and under singles to reduce moss and algae. It as worked well in my catch pan in my growing enclosure
Someone correct me if i am wrong...

Copper keeps algae and moss at bay because it is a very effective herbicide. I would guess that keeping copper in a s/h pot would likely have detrimental effects on the plant as well as the algae.

You basically have three choices - block the light from entering the pot, periodically treat with Physan or bleach, or don't worry about it.

I do a so-so job with the second option, and put the pots in decorative containers when I bring them in the house.
