OK I have re potted a few plants into s/h about a yr ago..
knowing that most the older/original roots have died and are rotting in my pots....what is the ruling on when to unpot them to clean out the dead stuff? Is there a rule of thumb about that?

I don't bother.

As the old roots die and decompose, they do offer some (minimal) nourishment, and I find that as I water, the little bits just flush right out of the pot over time.
