I'd be interested to know as well. And where do you find pots with no holes in the bottom and only part way up, at a hydroponics store?? I guess small food containers would work for an experiment.

Silken, I recommend 2L coke bottles, gatorade bottles, milk jugs, etc. Just lop off the top portion, cut some small holes in the bottom, and go for it. If you're like me, you should have a plastic bottle lying around somewhere for a quick experiment.

Oh ya! Good idea. A coke bottle is nice and clear so you can see what's going on with the roots too! Can always find a 2L coke bottle somewhere! Thanks.

It's much more expensive but I go to thrift stores or clearance stores like tj max and buy glass vases or similar and drill holes for the reservoir. Much nicer to display the orchids when in bloom. With that said I don't mind plastic jugs either as it's the plant that matters but my wife appreciates the beauty of the vases much more and keeps her happy.

Deli containers work well, and they look much nicer than coke bottles and such. They look like a nice plastic pot. I don't know if you can find them up in Canada, though. I don't find any here, so when I was in the US in 2010 I collected 8 of the large ones (I never have had so much deli food in my life!)

Lol Camille that's funny. For those in the US or those that can get things shipped easily, you can buy such containers online especially eBay.

Our new grocery store just put in a whole line of bulk foods in deli containers. I bought a large trail mix mainly for the container. My favourite containers are clear acrylic food containers from dollar stores. They last well.

We get some clear deli containers here too. I rarely ever buy stuff like that but could always do it 'for the chids' . As far as the pop bottles, they are super clear and I would just set them in a nicer vase or pot when in bloom. I will start out small and experiment only when I can divide a piece off of a plant to make sure I don't kill the whole thing!

I generally use the quart Chinese soup take-away containers. They're about 5 inches across and 5-1/2 - 6 inches tall. Drill 2 1/4 inch holes about 1 - 1-1/2 inches up from the bottom and you're good to go. On the containers around here, I found there is a faint ring around the bottom that is the perfect height for the holes, so now I don't even have the measure anymore.
The last time I got my Chinese fix I asked about just buying the containers. They thought it was a little strange, but offered to sell me as many as I wanted.
Oh, and the next time I see Ray, I need to buy some bigger pots. My Sharry Baby is growing like crazy. Especially since I moved it to a heat mat. I think I might need an 8 inch pot!
Cheers.
Jim
