To be honest, I'm not experienced about this method. I'm just another guy who try out new stuff and this is obviously works for Catts and possibly Den. I've heard a lot of rumors that water culture is not particularly good for Phal since water will seep up to the base of the lower leaves causing rot. However, I also have a struggling Phal. bellina so I put it in water culture hopefully "bellina girl" can keep up. Practice with caution!

In addition, to keep you updated on the progress, here is the most recent picture from my water culture experiment:
Hsin Buu Lady: a lot more new roots!!

Sanyung Ruby: start growing roots now!!

Den. Salaya: New shoot forming!

Phal bellina is on her way to water culture. More to come...

Congratulations Vinh! Those are some great results! Keep us posted on how they do in the long term, if you plan to grow any of them in long term water culture.

I have yet to try S/H myself, but I have heard from people who do both water culture and S/H that growing orchids in water culture to allow them to recover and to clean up infections, give time for viruses or pests to show, etc. also makes for a very easy transition to S/H. I would try your struggling phals in water culture, just make sure to monitor the center of the leaves and wick out any water that seeps into the center. Try to keep the water level as high as possible without water wicking into the leaves. Usually with water culture, it's best to cover all roots and rhizomes with water, but phals are an exception because of their growth habit. In fact, I would imagine most monopodial orchids with short stems would have this problem.
