I grow phals and catts in water culture in both East and South windows. I use week fertilizer and KLN and refresh every week. During the week I top off with tap/rain water if the water is low.

I assume vase size depends on amount of roots. Does it matter glass or clear plastic?

thats a cool idea, but if one had a disease then then they could be easily transported from plant to plant. also, would the roots grow down into the pipe-ing and then it would be hard to get them out. just my two cents

I think if Vanda seedlings can grow well in flasks with roots submerged in feeding medium, the those seedlings have a god chance to survive a transition to water culture. Has anyone tried it?

Lightbulb Other plants

Just thought I'd say...

I've accidentally, but successfully, grown Angel Wing Begonias, Kalanchoes, and Pelargoniums (Geraniums) in water culture.

Mainly when I'm rooting cuttings and don't get around to potting them forever. Unfortunately, once they are used to being in water culture for a long time- when you leave them in too long- they sometimes do not adapt well to growing in soil. (think a few months in the vase with a huge root ball)

I suspect that would be a different case with orchids.

:X I've rotted every orchid I've tried in water culture.

i have only used it twice. and only as a last ditch effort. i used it when the plant was assumed dead, and then gave it a try. the first time, worked like a charm!! the second time, not so well...

Default help

I tried it twice, but it didn't work out for me either time. I believe that the two Phals I was trying to basically bring back to life were really too far gone to save. I decided to give them a proper buriel and hope they went to orchid heaven. Maybe I'll try it again sometime but not on an orchid that is more than on it's last leg (which both of these were). I probably should learn more about this type of culture, as well. It certainly sounds interesting and I was impressed.
