I'm already beginning to get braver. I don't have a reed stem epidentrum, but I wish I did. A good outcome would probably help me get past my failures.
Thanks again,
Vicki

This is probably a bit late to join this conversation but I couldnt stop myself sharing some ideas with you.

1. Since in fish tank there is always enough oxygen (algae and air pump) floating some Phal.s over the water (wrapping some bubble wrap/.. around the neck of the plant) could have good results. on the other hand fish always produce good fertilizer which already is being used commercially in hydroponic culture.

2. putting some small fish to the vase for producing fertilizer and reducing extra algae.

3. adding some small amount of "Honey" to water. Honey has proven to have antimicrobial properties even in low concentration and on the other hand sugar has shown to increase the plant growth.

I have a question too.
Has anyone tried/heard water culture for Vandas?

I probably try some small deflasked seedlings on for this method.

I had a Phalaenopsis growing in water for a couple of weeks prior to repotting, so it would be well-hydrated, and it seemed to do well. I didn't have the nerve to leave it that way - was afraid it would rot.

I am the world's worst about saving houseplant cuttings in water, and have been doing so for years. I have noticed that most things do well growing that way, as long as you keep an eye on the water levels and change the water after fertilizing, so the algae growth isn't objectionable. Pothos, I know, will live quite happily for years in water, as does Philodendron.

I would love to try that, but I'm afraid it would be a magnet for the cats. One of my cousins had a betta that lived in a vase under a peace plant while he was in college - both seemed to do quite well together and I believe he'd had them living that way for quite some time. They travelled home with him on semester breaks.

I actually have a Pothos living in a beaker with water. Been that way for 5 years now. I guess I should get around to planting it some time soon.
