A few years back I had one in S/H and for the first 2 years it was growing like a weed. First years bloom, 2 spikes. The second years bloom, 5 spikes. Then on the third year it started declining rapidly. Don't know what caused the decline. But I am planning on trying again next Spring.

Just curious on what the status is on this? Is it still alive and thriving?

Yeah that really stinks Ted, and it's quite unusual. What did the roots look like and how did it pass on? Lucky, also would love to hear how yours is doing. If the middle roots are black, and it was moved from some media to the S/H, this could be the roots not used to S/H dying, and giving way for newer roots that are accostumed to S/H. Hopefully that's the case, but the pics and the root growth looks good to me. Let us know how it's doing now

Ted
I can sympathize. A similar thing happened to mine. The second set of beautiful healthy roots turned black as soon as they hit the leca. In the sunlight the salt build up was visible which happens with time no matter how well you rinse initially. I think these roots are very sensitive to salt toxicity.
Now I change out the top layers of leca before the new roots hit it and spray the top with pure water more frequently.

Thinking back and seeing your comments Sun rm.N.E. it was probably due to salt build up. At the time I did not think anything of it. The phals were doing great. But thinking about it now, it was more than likely the salts that did it in. Thanks all.
