Trt. Ollie Palmer

Met up with an old orchid friend I hadn't seen in five years at our local garden show. I saw a plant and thought at first it was a Psychopsis. Got me all excited. It isn't. So he gave me one to play with. I know nothing about it, but that's never stopped me before... Trt. Ollie Palmer.



I looked up the blooms, which aren't really to my style, but the foliage sure is. I'm going to presume it wants to be rescued from the bark mix it's in (other plants are probably whispering to it about my distinct issues with bark mixes). Looks to me like it's reaching out for transfer to semi-hydro...sure hope it likes the changeover.

Nice roots WW.

I picked one up at an auction this past summer. Next time I go down to the shade house I'll take a pic and post it. I know absolutely nothing about these things so maybe we can learn together.

The species come from a very wide range of climates and sun exposure. Bud has posted his Trichocentrum carthagense a few times. It's worth a look.

I recently got an Ollie Palmer too. Really enjoy the mottled mule ear leaves.

I’ve seen where a couple of growers experienced with these thick mule eared Trichocentrums recommend growing them in coarse mediums and letting them get drier in between waterings than others in the Oncidium alliance (their thicker roots are kinda of a clue). Their culture is very much like Cattleya care.

I haven't thought about my Ollie since winter. It's on a high shelf toward the far side of the shelf, so I can't really see it well unless I drag it forward and get it down on my level. Gonna go look!

If Ollie were to have a sexual definition, mine is just a plant, it would more likely identify as a boy.

I haven't looked at Ollie since February when I moved it to semi-hydro. Always try to put them somewhere not readily available for scrutiny so I don't fuss about it while they transition.

Seems to be enjoying its new digs.



You can see if you look back at the first pictures that the new roots that were coming out kind of stalled when I moved to SH, then it commenced new roots. If I unpotted it, likely the roots that were already down in that bark are pretty much rotting now. That's just part of moving from one medium to another. And also why I attempt to not watch the transition closely... who needs unwarranted stress?
