Live mosses

I have live moss growing in my small yard in various places so when the dog dug up a little chunk to carry around, I brought it inside to grow. I thought about buying some different types from an Amazon seller and growing it in a bowl. It is pretty cool stuff.

It definitely varies from state to state.
In PA mosses are regulated like any other plants. Federal law trumps all, so federally listed species are protected no matter where they grow. Here, any plant not federally listed can be collected from private property with owner permission, even species listed by the state as threatened or endangered within the borders of the Commonwealth.
