Yeah, I've seen folks use the wicking or even the self-watering pots for a sort of semi-hydro culture (not recommending self-watering pots). If doing SH, much more effective to use other methods already stated... grow cubes (my choice) covering top layer with non-porous rocks, etc. The rock wool, layered in, provides much more spaces to retain/release moisture to the LECA than a wicking cord or two, and easier to pot up. Just my opinion, having tried the wicking method a long ways back. Not super effective because ^^ what Ray said.
