well, we have some of you to thank for prompting this foray into s/h. the vote (2/5...maybe 3/5?) was to put this into s/h. i said we would, so we did!

obviously, the attempted pollination failed, so this morning i cut the spike and popped it into this little container i made up awhile ago. hopefully itll do well, and there are 2 new spikes coming out that we also hope make it!

prolly be back with more posts and questions on this....

Those roots don't look like s/h roots; they appear to be ariel type roots. I hope it sprouts some s/h roots soon or you may have problems. Ray has kelpmax which encourages root growth.

Interestingly enough, aerial roots seem to adapt nicely when submerged in media.

for sure, most of the pics i see of this if not potted are mounted. I had half a mind to put it in the terrarium, and i was thinking of maybe getting another one just for that (the terrarium is sort of my little baby!). if this one shows signs of serious decay in awhile we will rethink. always an experiment! it seemed like some opinions before we on the cool temps of this and that the cooling of sh might be beneficial. i bought that for a dollar and here we are...

and also yes, kelpmax is where it’s at! we got a bottle from besgrow in the Netherlands and i have been using it for my ficus bonsai as well. i have never had my ficus put out so many dormant new growths, it’s amazing! they responded after about 2 days after the first application. we have used the kelpak as it’s sold here twice now on the orchids, dilute mixed with some ferts and tap water at about 6.5 ph. anecdotal results are positive so far

Being submerged in LECA is very close to being out in the air, except for less light.
