Someone in my orchid society grows most of their orchids in full hydroponics (like greenhouse tomatoes). They test the water and keep everything perfectly balanced as well as have air pumped into the water. The plants are all in LECA. They did a talk for our Orchid Society and it was fascinating. So, it can be done.

The wicking system is very easy, too. I have tried that with herbs. I cut cotton rope and looped it through the medium and the ends of the rope went through holes into the reserve below. Works well.
