Also dull bits, impatience, and choosing really, really cheap glass with fun shapes like my beer glasses and wine glasses I think the dull bits part is the most critical, I don't know how often ya'll replace yours, but it seems like they are honestly only good for a couple vases, and so I end up needing a bit of force to keep it going, and tend to break the glass right when it "punches" through. For a while I was breaking glasses more often and realized that I didn't have my drill bit in far enough and it was oscillating enough to cause problems.

The wood shim mentioned above is also something I haven't tried, but I am now going to etch my holes with the vibra-marker I used for etching the glass numbers, and I suspect that will get me started a lot easier.

I haven't tried FULLY submerged though.

Are you using a diamond bit hole saw MrGuy? It does make a lot of difference. I can drill about 75 +/- glasses before I can tell it's time to replace. Could likely get more, but it's easier and faster to buy a new bit.

Completely underwater I don't believe is necessary and don't think it would improve the process. Just a very slow trickle or a second person willing to squirt water every five or so seconds works well, especially when drilling a bunch at a time.

I sure understand the patience part. I'm not very, and find myself sometimes gritting my teeth that the process is taking longer than I thought it should

I suspect we are arriving at the core of my incompetency. I have bits that are labeled as glass/ceramic available from the big box hardware store. I don't think they are diamond, and looking on Lowes.com makes me think what was readily available was carbide and steel bits.

They are this product, or a very similar one, labeled on the package for ceramics and glass: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-4-Pi...t-Set/50041536

Yep, it appears so. I tried one of those when first learning, and it was impossible. Get one similar to this, and don't look back... (Google 1/4" diamond hole saw or diamond hole bit)

Thanks, going to give those a try. Obviously, I'll be needing new vases sooner than later.

I really kind of love the terrarium of orchid effect with the big fish bowls and I wish I had more space to display them properly. I need to get some like, center piece punch bowls and see if I can get a similar effect.

One of my first SH containers was a big crystal punch bowl inherited from my mom. It was a cool display. They're great for orchids that like to ramble around. I'm sure mom was rolling in her grave when I found it and decided to use it. But Mom... who uses crystal punch bowls for parties now? The punch cups weren't very useable... not enough depth for most orchids I grow, but I drilled the bottom of a few and used the little crystal luncheon plates as saucers for some AV's. Pretty fancy, huh?

I hear that's what they call, "orchid culture".
