I think you're overlooking the HUGE water absorption capacity of diatomite. I'd be willing to bet that volume-for-volume, the diatomite holds a lot more water than CHC.

An inorganic component in a mix - by itself - has no impact on the "breathability". That's 100% related to particle size, shape and uniformity.
