Brings a whole new light to the watering with ice cubes, doesn't it?

Now that my plants are outside for the summer, I have learned a new "feature" of rock wool cubes: maple seed germinate REALLY well in it!

Bill... EVERTHING germinates in RW! Maple helicopters??? We took out about a fifty-60 foot one, stupid silver maple last year. Nirvana this spring! The real deal maples... not nearly as invasive. Whoever thought up silver maple should be strung up!

We just had a very gnarly maple removed. It was in terrible shape after living through many hurricanes. A sweet gum went with it. Both had their roots soaked in salt water during the Isaias storm serge last year.

After a few months of experimentation, I'm blown away by the results.
Old roots branch out like mad, new roots pop out like crazy.
I tend to prefer a layer of rock wool at the top of the pot; it seems to give better results (in my conditions) as new roots directly plunge into the moist wool and grow better than those looking for a way through LECA.
