Miniature Orchid Recommendation? - Attached to wood with lightly flowing water
Unhappy Miniature Orchid Recommendation? - Attached to wood with lightly flowing water

I am very new here, so I apologize if this is the wrong board.

I am specifically looking for a miniature orchid. Basically, I have an aquarium with a portion of a trunk of wood sticking out of the water. It has a waterfall-like feature with water flowing from the top back into the aquarium, mainly on one side. I would like to tie an orchid to the side of the trunk for it to eventually permanently attach itself.

The water is RODI water that I reconstitute to very soft levels, minimal minerals, due to fish needs. I can adjust the flow of the water, depending on what the plant needs. I can also have the pump turn off for regular intervals throughout the day, if the plant needs to slightly dry out from time to time. Also, depending on where I put the orchid on the trunk, more or less of the root section will have water flowing over it.

The water is kept at 75°F. I can turn a fan on the ceiling to circulate some air, but I was also thinking that I could add a small computer fan to specifically blow air around the orchid.

Here is an image of the trunk. The water flows over the end opposite of this side:

I have been researching on Andy's Orchids, but I'm still unsure. Please let me know if I can provide any further information or if there are any questions.

Thank you!

There are many orchids that would absolutely love this as long as you mount them bare root for maximum air exposure to the roots. I actually grow my Haraella rectrocalla with the bottom of the mount in water so that water is wicked up to the roots. You could grow many Bulbophyllums this way, too, as well as anything else thats roots prefer to stay moist. Good luck choosing!

Thank you for the feedback. I definitely plan on having the roots mounted bare. I'll look into the Haraella and Bulbophyllums.

Any thoughts on Dendrobium masarangense or Lepanthpsis rinkei? Those were two others that appear to not mind wet feet.

Thanks!

The water is kept at 75°F. The ambient temperature in my house stays between 74°F at night, 76°F when I am home, and 78-79°F when I'm gone, since it is currently summer.

In the winter, I'd say the ambient gets to about 68-69°F at night/when I'm gone and 72-73°F when I am home.

I don’t think you could fit one on that piece but a phrag would enjoy it.

I think I saw that recommended on other threads of a similar topic. It's too bad that it won't fit.

Does that stump always stay that wet? What's the diameter of stump? There are miniature phrags available.

There's a guy here, Akhenaten, who grows tons of different miniatures. You should look through his thread for ideas as well (link below). And I'm sure he'd answer any question you might have... Project Phoenix

PS And he has an extremely cool carnivorous plant called Utricularia pubescens, which might look really nice on top of that stump.
