Aloe Vera in S/H
Anyone successful with this? I've had one in there for over a month, and it's getting all shriveled up, which makes me think that it isn't taking any water up... so I had to buy a new one yesterday. I'm about to give up on aloe in S/H unless someone has some kind of trick they know?!

Seems to me they wouldnt take to it very well. Have you seen or heard of others having success?

i do not think succulents take kindly to s/h; as they are desertplants and store water in their leaves;which they use during the dry season.
constant water at their roots would probably make them mushy

That would be my assessment, as well, but there is a lady near here who grows all sorts of succulents in S/H culture, which totally amazes me.
Remember, it's not "just" the medium and watering regime that affect success, it's the whole giant set of growing conditions.

I live in central Florida and Aloe and other succulents grow very well here. They prefer good drainage. Mine grows for the most part in a sandy loam with a little potting soil or organic peat distributed throughout. They like 4 to 6 hours of sun each day and need to be lightly watered no more than once or twice a week. I don't have a regular fertilizing regime, but sometimes spritz the soil with a little left over orchid fertilizer.

I've done it specifically, and accidentally.
I love to experiment.
But Ray is correct, its the growing regimen, not the medium, that dictates success.
Aloe can grow SH, but don't water as frequently, and make sure it dries completely.
I've rehabilitated a few cacti this way...as it keeps me (really, my mom) from over watering, and I used diatomite.

Hi Kati, your plant looks very much like A lpinia purpurata Alpinia purpurata - Red ginger (Zingiberaceae) - Plants of Hawaii probably a different plant too, but for sure gingiberaceae lovelly plant, can become very large. They love lots of water too...
