Some beginner questions about S/H

in a real "wow, that's so obvious i feel kind of stupid" moment of Eureka! i realized that the actual tops to the containers i was using could *gasp* be used as tops?!?!?!

i did a tiny bit of shifting of some of the plants to the side of the containers but now the condensation in the container is significantly higher and the water level stays the same for a day or more....

i anticipate less air exchange and will compensate with a water flush every 3-4 days at minimum.

i wanted to ask a few more questions.

1) if i am using rainwater with nothing added, is there any down side to flushing the container everyday?

2)how do you supplement the plant's mechanical support? i have a Plurathalis that i have in s/h and, given the monopoidial nature of the plant, it is trying to climb out of the LECA. do you use stakes? orient the plant sideway.

Pleurothallids actually are sympodial...they grow along a rhizome. However, they also grow long/tall. Staking certainly helps keeping from flopping over and pulling itself out of the medium. But possibly, it's just trying to be pendant... possibly a basket would work better, or mount it.

thank, i always say those two backwards, i meant sympodial

i like the extra moisture with the S/H but i was wondering about these crawly plants and if they don't lend themselves to this culture

I've just started drilling glass and this makes sense. Not drilling 2 holes will be a bit easier, especially on some of the smaller containers I'm using

Flush daily if want. No harm. Unless it’s something that really does want a bit of drying off. Watching the dryline is more important.

How about a picture of your crawly one? I have numerous crawling ones in SH. But because of your location, as Roberta says, you might prefer to mount or basket it. .

Absolutely. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on the view, when one doesn’t do much in the way of automated watering, it’s superfluous. Especially with glass.
