yall are crazy. i work at a glass company, main thing is you have to keep you work surface cool at all times, with water spray. if drilling only.

but there is another way

heat with a torch, in one spot, until glowing, grab a straw, blow a hole.

wear safety glasses please when doing anything with glass

Heating any glass to melting without any way to anneal it is an invitation for a broken glass vessel down the line.

What king of glass company? Art or scientific?

Talking Just melt the side a blow a hole innit!

Wow, that looks really fun. I like the idea of getting interesting thrift store glass ware.
I read your article several times, but I don't see how high to place the hole from the bottom?
I'm wondering if the size of the glass comes into play. Kind of a ratio of LECA in the reservior and the top?

I read Ray said about an inch from plastic cup bottoms.

thank you!

Depends mostly on the type of plant plus height of the vessel. I have a few 4" tall glass that's drilled about an inch above base. Anything 6-8" usually around 2" from base. taller than that, maybe 3" or so from base. Plants that really like water, like phrag, miltonia, paph, etc, always get a decent size reservoir. For example, I wouldn't put a phrag into a ten or twelve inch tall vessel with a 1" reservoir.

It's not an "exact" sort of thing... kind of like cooking... a little of this, a lot of that.
