Well my little grandkids (buckets of joy and cesspool of virus) spent five days here, along with the usual holiday chaos, and blessed me with a gastrointestinal bug. Very well understood. Falalalala can’t wait for next go-round.

Would ya like another chemist joke? I’ve got plenty.

What happened when the fungi met the algae?

They started lichen each other.

if you are struggling to get your plants balanced....just keep adding water until you get a solution.

my solution is to add alcohol, to myself....some one keeps call me a tincture but i just feel drunk

AN UPDATE:

I now have samples in-hand or on the way of
Hydroton
Odla (Ikea)
Hydrocrunch (Home Depot)

Additionally, someone is sending Monto clay, ClayMax, and Ultra D.E Dark, sold for bonsai.

Any other brands are welcomed!

I should have the last of the samples in this week, so once I find my EC meter and possibly some pH strips, I'll get at it.

Very interesting. Will have to study this up a bit. I figured the HydroCrunch would have a bit less absorption than some of the others, Odla, Cz, etc.

I believe you're accurate about the clay slip on the HydroCrunch. That was my thought when I bought first bag and noticed how smooth it was. I'd also noticed how much floatier it is. It's a PITA, but learned to appreciate that float factor especially when transitioning to SH. If one pots up to allow about an inch below top of pot, it really floats up and churns around a bit, effectively speeding up getting rid of debris from the roots that rot during transition.

The other thing I noticed was less absorption when I first started using it. It seemed to take a very long time to get better absorption within the pot when freshly potted. Now I leave a few gallons always soaking in RO, and use from it when potting/repotting. With the long presoaking it seems to be similar to the Odla or Hydroton absorption-wise from the get go.

All this is very non-scientific and just observation, but thought I'd put it out there anyway.

PS Thank you very much for performing the tests Ray!
It's appreciated especially by those of us who grow mostly in SH.

Very interesting, Ray. Thanks for doing this. Your photographs are an excellent example to see the wicking properties.
