Priz - I think you are worrying too much, and would guess that your idea of keeping the house cool is plenty warm for a phal in s/h, especially if you can maintain a decent humidity level (which will make you more comfortable, too).

If you keep your house in the 50's, that's another matter, and in that case, simply drain the reservoir after watering so the medium can dry a bit. Repotting can be quite stressful to a plant, so should be avoided unless it's absolutely necessary.

Thank you Ray for the temp observation and thank you all for your comments.

While it is true, humidity was a concern of mine from the start, the mid spring weather in sunny CA was a bit drier than I would have wanted for my phal.

Then again it was the second time around I tried to grow orchids and my very first with s/h.

I did follow the advice back then and moved it to a bigger s/h pot, it just didn't take.

Fortunately it is growing new roots and that makes me happy!

I would love to give s/h another try in the near future
