Good choice mere_dog. Nowadays most software can handle LZW, and it's totally lossless. The next best choice is to ZIP the tiff, but I haven't found much difference in the final file size from LZW...

Tiffs converted from RAW are bigger than the RAW, but they can certainly be changed to 8 bit and LZW (lossless) compression which comes out to about the same as ZIPping the tiffs.
