Orchid response to amplified sounds/electromagnetic fields
OK, here's the thing - I recently moved all my den phals from my living room (right next to the front right speaker of my home cinema system) to a much quieter area of the house. Other than the difference in decibels and electromagnetic fields, everything else remains about the same - light levels, RH, temperature, watering and fertilising all pretty much unchanged. After a little over a month since the change, I've noticed an incredible difference in general health of the plants. All of them are putting out at least one new growth - the best performer is a NoID which had died back to bare canes, 2 of which had gone soft and had to be amputated ... it now has three new growths. Another has a basal growth and a keiki on the first leaf node.
As all other regularly-considered factors have remained the same, I can only assume that amplified sounds/electromagnetic fields have a particularly detrimental effect on den phals. Either that or I'm playing totally the wrong kind of music.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this before?

As plants are solid objects, they vibrate like any solids would. If the vibrations are not what it's used to in their natural environment, it may jar the tissues to affect nutrient transport and resting/grow cycles. It has been shown in experiments that plants prefer classical than rock in terms of growth. In addition EMFs affect the ion exchange in living things (such as iron transport in humans and increasing the blood brain barrier inefficiency). The combo can be lethal to plants by logic.
Light cycles play with plant growth and resting cycles too. A simple light in the living room turned on all night can affect them.
Perhaps the temperatures in the living are slightly higher due to resting electronics ...

In my opinion, the are too many uncontrolled variables and undefined factors in your situation to make a solid cause & effect judgement. That, and the fact that plants - especially orchids - don't react all that quickly. Those new growths were probably on their way physiologically, a while ago.

I agree with Ray. (Yes, yes . . . disturbance in The Force again . . . )
There is an old saying in science that correlation does not equal causation. A hypothetical example would be if someone determined that ice cream sales at a particular beach increased at the same time that shark attacks increased, and blamed ice cream for the incidence of shark attacks (or concluding that shark attacks make beach-goers hungry for ice cream). There may be no denying that the two observations correlate, but the correlation may be due to some other factor (such as ice cream sales, and shark attacks, increase when there are more people at the beach).

It does seem likely that something had triggered all these plants to initiate new growth before they were moved. Seasonal environmental triggers can occur many months before we see any effects. Plants in modern homes are subjected to a wide array of electromagnetic fields. Lights and fans in particular can be very close to plants. Still, it could be your taste in music. Bagpipes? Death metal? Celine Dion?

I wonder how sure you are about the conditions being the same.
Maybe they're not...

I am envisioning Celine Dion performing death metal, accompanied by bagpipes . . .and I like it (at least better than imagining the three separately).
