Phal tetraspis C1, speciosa standings

I seldom dip my toes in these waters but Naoki's post had me wondering again.

So, is speciosa officially back?
Any confirmation tetraspis C1 is a hybrid as one theory posed? Wasn't it originally found near speciosa habitat?

I got a C1 because I knew I was getting a C1 (not flowered yet), where as speciosa was "extinct". Since then, a C1 isn't necessarily a C1.

I would love to know as well.. I haven't see anything.. so I would like to see an article about this

Recently in the IPA (International Phalaenopsis Alliance) Journal Second Quarter Vol.23(2) 2013 they had an article on speciosa and tetraspis with drawings and descriptions from when the 2 species were originally found. The article makes for very interesting reading.
You may want to get your hands on one if you can.

The author ends the article with, "There is strong opinions about the validity and identity of these species in the orchid community. While I have not seen specimens of both, examining the available drawings reveals that P. tetraspis and P. speciosa are certainly closely related if not conspecific.
If these two are the same species, the correct name would be P. tetraspis Rchb.f."

So in the end there is no real answer.

And until it is possible to thoroughly search the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, if the Indian army permits… We may know if there's a living surviving plant of the supposedly speciosa to compare…

I'll see how my tetraspis blooms. My concern isn't which I have or if its even a hybrid. I just want it to bloom a certain way. With reputable vendors offering the speciosa var tetraspis (or vis versa) and the like, I was getting confused.

AnonYMouse, I've had the same concern as to how a C1/speciosa/tetraspis's flowers turn out... I'm lookin for a (well, ok a few) specific type(s) myself...

Don't forget that C#1 (speciosa or tetraspis) will bloom with more white when grown with cooler temps and less light as in winter. Summer with brighter light and warmer temps should give you more red and blotching or you may even get almost solid red from your plant.
Almost never will your plant bloom the same or even have 2 blooms that look alike, is the nature of the beast and one of the reasons why we are infactuated with this species(?).
