I honestly think theyre weird. theyre just unnatural looking. maybe its just in our genetics not to like blue in some plants like how the only blue fruit is blueberries. I think im just fine with my blues in my collection. the zygo family has some wonderful shades and when vanda season comes around even more blue, and natural "blue" at that. im guessing its the tone of the blue which is fairly solid that gives it that fake look. on other flowers you don't just get a solid colour, they glisten and change from different angles. im much happier with a lavender phal than all the way blue

This process has patent #US8440879.
It uses recombinant DNA.
'The method produces an orchid having a blue flower, which comprises transfecting a white moth orchid with the gene, a gene encoding a dihydroflavonol 4-reductase of Torenia or Gerbera ; a gene encoding a flavanone 3-hydroxylase; and a gene encoding an anthocyanidin synthase and expressing the genes.'
Frankenflowers indeed.
They have overloaded the plant with genetic blue from other common blue flowering plants.
I have doubts as it being considered an orchid by the RHS or any other society bec of the recombinant DNA being used. It is no longer purely an orchid if its been genetically altered IMO. Interesting though and not as fake looking as the Blue Mystique Food colored flowers.

Ummm I am not digging the blue orchids. They just seem odd and out of place.

the blue seems to knock down the crystalline glow that many orchids naturally have. You know that little sparkle when you tilt the bloom just right. They dont reflect the light off the bloom and they seem dull and well lifeless.Plastic.So yeah they dont float my boat either.

I just contacted the seller, he should get back to me in a few days with some info.
Since it is growing season for Thelymitras right now in the northern hemisphere, I have to ask if they are able to be shipped right now, or if it is preferable to wait.
Once I find out more information, I will proceed to provide more information to those interested in placing a group order.

So what was the end of the story? Did anybody succeed in ordering the plants?

Its genes have been altered. If they DNA test the plant its not all orchid. Orchid isnt part of the Lilly family but its not a far stretch from orchid to lilly. The DNA and recombinant genes of the lilly IMO make it not an orchid. A 'Lillychid' maybe . Im curious to see how they are represented at Orchid Societys and how they are eventually classified. Its a very interesting situation indeed if for no other reason than the science involved and how much work went into the plants. And Im also pretty sure you cant buy one of these at any price right now. Well maybe 100,000 USD might get you 1

That's a "no-go" for me too. I don't like it. Personally, I'm not dying for a blue orchid.

I don't like it either. When pigments combine through natural hybrid action, it seems to be much more elegant.
