I have a Den. Sabine x bigibbum ssp compactum which I see has been registered on RHS as Den Winnie Quek.
My question is: Is the correct tag name Den. Winnie Quek or Den Winnie Quek ssp compactum or Den. Winnie Quek var compactum?
Inquiring minds want to know.
I need to update my tag.
If you want to be correct, write Dendrobium Winnie Quek on the label. If you want to be wise, write Dendrobium Winnie Quek on the label and either in brackets or on the other side of the label write Den Sabine x bigibbum var compactum. Jones and Clements proposed that Dendrobium bigibbum var compactum be changed to Vappodes lithicola several years ago. If the RHS ever accepts the splitting of bigibbum, you may want to remember which bigibbum was used in your cross.
Andrew's advice is exactly correct. Whatever you choose to put on a tag, always maintain all the information about the cross somewhere, in exactly the way it was given. It may be important later, and without it you could end up with a misidentified plant, which is far worse than a NOID.
