how do i go abut registering a hybrid?

hi all! i have a blc ( lawless freischutz x goldenzelle ). i looked it up on RHS, but didnt find anything. i have a friend whos baby girl passed away about a week before her due date. and i would really like to get an orchid named after her daughter, Havana. can someone tell me if the cros is in fact un-registered please? just to double check, again, i looked on RHS and nothing cam up, but i dont want to be missing something

Searching the RHS database is tricky. It doesn't like to recognize apostrophes, dashes, or misspelled names. Try putting in as little data as possible (one parent) and sort through the results.

To register a hybrid you need to be the originator, or have done your due diligence to contact him or her. You also must flower it and take a photo, pay a fee, and fill out a form. These steps are also on the RHS site.

It is apparently not a registered cross, at the moment.

1) Have you bloomed it? You have to be the first person to do so.
2) If the answer is "yes", as Royal said, you're going to have to do some digging - I'd start with the vendor you got it from. If they did not make the cross, ask them where they got it. If you come to a dead end, that doesn't necessarily mean you cannot register it, but you really have to try and find the originator.

so i would have to be the first person to bloom it? i havent bloomed it, so it will have to wait until after that. but after that, i will do the research, and really try to find the originator. if and when i find the originator, would i ask them if i could name it? or what? i think its something i want to put the work into, because this would mean alot to the mother.

There are several orchids already registered as Havana something, it might be simpler to try and obtain one of those? The International Orchid Register / RHS Gardening

I searched "Havana" as a Grex name, and found several orchids. One Cymbidium is just "Havana", the others have other words in the name.

Hmm!! thats very good to know! maybe i will just get her one of those. though i do think it would be special to have one named especially for her

boy do i feel stupid!! my mom just informed me that the babies name was actually Havalah.

I wonder if it is the best thing for the mother to remind her of her loss. Sometimes better accept the hard facts of life and move on. She will always remember the baby no matter of what.
The best is that she may try to have another baby if she wants to and it is doable.

I think would be more appropriate to name a cultivar after some new baby born.
I think your effort is generous.

A name is just a name. Probably there are not as many Havalahs registered as Havanas.

The Orchids Limited site appears to be offering a service whereby they'll register one of their hybrids with a name of your choice. They'll no doubt charge a premium over the RHS's fees and who knows what the quality of the cross will be but it might suit your purposes better than chasing around for a breeder's permission.

thanks for your input guys. it doesnt look like something that will happen anytime soon, so i guess ill just put it on the back-shelf.

this is something, that i know for a fact she would appreciate though.
