Homeotic mutant ???Phal Baldans Kalaidescope
I try not to buy Jane Doe orchids from generic home supply stores but this one struck me as being rather strange. Ok, I'm an animal developmental biologist-- not a plant person-- but this struck me as being rather strange. Does this Phal Baldans Kalaidescope have three labella or am I just seeing triple? If this were Drosophila melanogaster I would call this a homeotic mutant and name it triple lip
I will now try to attach the photo. Forgive me if it doesn't work. I'm a complete newbie to Orchid Board.

It is a genetic mutation in orchids. It's what's called peloric.

I believe it's a mutation that came about as a result of repeated cloning.

OK; Many thanks!-- but I still need to know if peloric mutants are homeotic-- or is that term not used by plant people? Can any one point me to an article or citation explaining pelorics?
Thanks again!

Thanks to King of Orchid Growing I now have the correct term. I searched the web and found the follwing article but I can't access it from my home computer.
ISHS Acta Horticulturae 766: XXVII International Horticultural Congress - IHC2006: International Symposium on Ornamentals, Now!
SOMACLONAL VARIATION IN ORCHIDS AND THE APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Authors: Fure-Chyi Chen, Jun-Yi Yu, Pei-Yin Chen, Ya-Wen Huang
I gather from the abstract that a peloric is a somatic mutation?

Thanks for the link. . I am fascinated by zygomorphy so I'll have to check out the full article when I get back to work on Monday!

I added links to more articles.
Many of these articles you have to pay for in order to read the entire thing.
But the trade off is this is real science done in a lab with real experiments. It's not just somebody's presumptions, assumptions, or anecdotes.

Thanks!
I drove in to work just so I could access the fulltext pdfs of these links (and others) from my office computer. I am currently printing them so I can read over the weekend.
I've been a developmental geneticists for decades-- how did I miss this? Serves me right for being so focused on studying fruitflies. I should have listened to the fruitflies and studied fruits-- or pre-fruits- instead.
You are King!

Without people studying fruitflies, how would reptile and amphibian hobbyists be able to get a hold of flightless fruitflies?
BTW, those articles are relatively recent. They were published anywhere between 2003 and 2007.
