This is a different issue from the changes in taxonomy.
The original cross was made with a mis-labelled plant. Several people worked out that the official parents could not possibly have produced the actual outcome (against the established rules for genetics). There was an article in the AOS magazine about this several years ago.
By the time that this was recognized, multiple generations of progeny that are actually the same, had been registered with different names. Thus, the 'group' designations.
