C. Penny Kuroda nomenclature question Male
Default C. Penny Kuroda nomenclature question

One thing I don't quite understand after coming back to orchids after so long has to do with the Catt hybrid Penny Kuroda. It is now being separated into three groups; Caudebec Gp, Sophia Martin Gp, and Penny Kuroda Gp. This has something to do with crosses within the same hybrid and maybe two different people registering the same cross (which the nomenclature rules should have nullified).

Can someone explain the nomenclature rules at work here and what the combinations are?

Thanks.

Reclassifications made for lots of ambiguities. One way they have been resolved is to append the registration date to the grex name

But none of the ancestors were reclassified (i.e. Braz Lealias). All are old Cattleyas.

I vaguely recall reading... the original cross may have been made with a mislabeled plant, but nobody can be sure.

Maybe four groups ----- link.

Just type 'Penny Kuroda' into the Grex box. And then click on the 'Search>' button.

This is a different issue from the changes in taxonomy.

The original cross was made with a mis-labelled plant. Several people worked out that the official parents could not possibly have produced the actual outcome (against the established rules for genetics). There was an article in the AOS magazine about this several years ago.

By the time that this was recognized, multiple generations of progeny that are actually the same, had been registered with different names. Thus, the 'group' designations.

Due to the multiple 'grex' names involved now ----- it just looks like the Penny Kuroda label has become a waste of our time ------ because C. Penny Kuroda (Caudebec Gp) is not the same as C. Penny Kuroda (Penny Kuroda Gp).

And C. Penny Kuroda (Caudebec Gp) is not the same as C. Penny Kuroda (Sophia Martin Gp).

While Penny Kuroda (Penny Kuroda Gp) is equivalent to C. Penny Kuroda (Sophia Martin Gp).

In all of the above ----- even the 'brackets' are a part of the grex name.
