Fast growing orchids to divide quickly, help find 'Oswald' Female
Default Fast growing orchids to divide quickly, help find 'Oswald'

For my birthday, I was gifted an 'orchid adoption fund' from several of my friends to be used for, well, adopting new orchids. The one condition was that one of the orchids is to be named 'Oswald'. The reason being that one of my friend has multiple times bought and named an orchid 'Oswald', only to have it quickly die off every single time.

Now I thought it would be great if 'Oswald' could be an orchid which grows very quickly and divides easily, so that I can give a piece of 'Oswald' to my friends (two divisions needed). Bonus points if the orchid is purple (all 'Oswald's were apparently purple) and if it is easy to take care of.

Gongora galeata is an easy grower and very quick to reach specimen size. No purple however, the regular type is orange and there's a yellow form as well.

Zygopetalum would fit the criteria.

I like the look of this zygopetalum, do you think it will fit the bill? And when you say 'fast growing', how fast should I be thinking?

Dendrobium kingianum is the best fit I can think of. Mine is a hardy vigorous grower. It was one of my first orchids, gifted to me as an established 3 cane division from a friend.

It doubled its number of canes the first year I had it and sent up a keike. It sent up its first blooms on the second year. I think it could have bloomed the first year too if I’d put it in a brighter location.

I grow this one , it grows very quickly - blooms 3 or 4 times a year and I have six plants out of the original.

I have a bunch of Den Mini Purple that grow new canes so fast, I have to split the plants in two every year. They grow kiekis so frequently I'm tired of potting them..
