Cross-pollinating different genera
Default Cross-pollinating different genera

I've been trying to grow some seed pods. After two unsuccessful attempts I currently have only different orchids blooming; one NoID phal, one dwarf NoID phal, a miltoniopsis and several intergenerics/oncidiums that look wildly different.
I've read that self-pollination is not as effective as cross-pollination (indeed one of my two attempts was a self-pollination), but it probably outweighs the risk of sterile seeds if I cross plants that are different genera? How about crossing the dwarf phal with the full sized phal?

Orchids have evolved into several groups, which growers often call "alliances." In many cases plants from related genera in one alliance can be crossed. I'm not familiar with any successful crosses between parents in different alliances.

Two different individual plants in the same genus will usually produce viable seed. Your Phals will probably cross successfully.

Thank you for that helpful information. 'Alliances' turned out to be the key word I was looking for. I'll definitely also cross the phals though, just to up my chances of success.
