Nice weed! Male
Default Nice weed!

A couple months ago I started experimenting with germinating orchid seeds on a non-sterile substrate of wet cardboard, sphagnum moss, and a bit of soil from a thick patch of woods. I blended them together into a thick paste and sowed some Cattleya seeds on it. Nothing from the Cattleya yet, (they have proven difficult, unlike quite a few others to propagate this way) but I did find this little guy. I actually noticed about 2 weeks ago what I thought was a germinating weed seed that had gotten into the mix and somehow survived the blending. Well it turns out I was right, although that "germinating seed" actually turned out to be the protocorm that this little guy developed from. Since I was looking for symbiotic fungi, I did get the woods soil from an open patch surrounded by two colonies of Goodyera pubescens......

Cool! Good luck!

Maybe the Cattleyas take longer or need warmer conditions? I have no idea. I hope, though, that your experiment will be a success.
