Thanks for following along with me on this adventure, everyone!

Flasking is such a fun thing to do...

Amanda - this is an EXCELLENT way of getting more chids, cheaply and stealthily...the only thing it costs is a bit of loose change and time. Just to give you an idea, a package of seed costs about 4 bucks, media costs around 4-6 and flasks (ie baby food jars) themselves can probably be bought off craigslist/gotten for free. All you need is some bleach, ethanol, an old 10 gallon aquarium that can be sterilized and a pressure cooker. Voila...baby orchids

UPDATE: for those of you still following me on this little adventure...

So I'm a little late in posting these pics, since I deflasked the little guys over a month ago. So far so good, and only a few casualties. I can spot new root growth on a few of the plantlets. You can see from the second last pic that I had TONS of plants, of varying sizes.

These are the laelia lucasiana seedlings and I will now say that I will NEVER again make 6 replate flasks...jeez! The barkeria seedlings I deflasked several months ago and mounted on cork, and seem to be doing OK, putting out several post-deflask roots. Since we're entering winter here, most are going a bit dormant.

Anyway, here are the pics - click to see larger images, more images, as well as explanations and captions on flickr:

Congrats, Calvin. They look nice and healthy. Did you replate all six mother flasks? How many replates did that leave you with? Man, you're swimming in Laelias.

Thanks for checking in! I'm hoping these little guys survive the winter and I can start dividing them up and potting them in a more suitable media. I feel like these rupiculous laelias won't do too well in pure sphag which is what the compots are.

Royal - I meant to say 6 replate flasks....from 2 small mother flasks!
