In case anyone is still following this thread, here are images of the seedlings today. They were replated roughly 2 months ago, and they seem to be pretty happy!
Undergrounder - I got the media from the OSP as well...it's pretty cheap and seems to work well. I think I need to experiment a bit with the reflask media as I notice they are not growing AS fast as they did in the mother flask media....
Just an update in case anyone was wondering how things were going! I'm left with only two species cause I had some problems replating. I had a huge flasking experiment 3 months ago that completely failed because my vented flasks dried out and I didn't get to replating fast enough. I've learned that until replating, flasks can be completely sealed. Anyway, everyone from my first flasking is healthy since the replate 4 months ago
The first is laelia lucasiana and the second is barkeria spectabilis.
Made another batch of flasks this weekend...hope they sprout! I used a pressure cooker this time to sterilize the media (P668 at half strength with 15g/L of sucrose) so I'm not sure if it will work as well. Seeded this time:
Catt walkeriana var. alba
Laelia crispilabia
Laelia sincorana
Rangaeris amaniensis
Ancistrochilus rothschildianus
I've realized that starting too many seeds makes replating a NIGHTMARE...and I don't have the space for 100 flasks so I went easy this time and only made one or two mother flasks for each plant. Fingers crossed!
Very cool, Calvin. I'm glad to see this thread updated regularly. It gives more of a complete picture. The flasks look great! The L. lucasiana already looks like a rupiculous Laelia - neat. Good luck with the next batch. It sounds (and looks) like you're on the right track. I look forward to the next update.
This has been a really cool thread! Way to go Calvin! I really need to learn more about flasking, this is giving me ideas on how to get more orchids in the house under my husbands nose!! Hehehe. Looks like I've got some researching to do!
