Keiki HELP!!
Default Keiki HELP!!

HELP!! I was given this orchid (along with another one that is doing really good still) that is dead other than the spike which is barely holding on due to the keiki growing there. The spike is showing signs of dehydration as is the poor little baby. 😩 this baby is only about an inch or so long and only has leaves, no roots. How can I help this little one? I've soaked the mother in hopes that she might have a smidgen of life yet and get something to her offspring, but it hasn't seemed to help. Should I cut the spike and put it in water? SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!

It would be helpful if we had a pic, and also what type of orchid it was.

Welcome to the OB. I'm sure you'll get a number of suggestions, but for what it's worth, I think I would cut the spike with the keiki on it, and put the 'bottom' cut end of the spike in a small pot of spag moss, and put this on a heat mat. In maybe a quart container, I would make up a super weak mix of water and a drop of KLN, or Kelp Max to keep the moss damp. No idea if this would work...maybe you'd have to have the keiki touching the moss as well as the cut end put down into the moss.?? If possible, I would place a baggie over it to maintain humidity. I may be totally off base here, but as I said, you'll get much more experienced members to steer you right!
