Mormodes keikis?
Default Mormodes keikis?

Dear group members, this orchid comes from Veracruz state of Mexico. I believe it is a Mormodes (likely M. maculata unicolor). Recently I found several baby plants on the old pseudobulbs. Are these keikis? I thought keikis form only on orchids like Epidendrums, Dendrobiums and Phalaenopsis, but not on Catasetinae.

SVO refers to it as 'new growth'. Make sure they are 5 inches in height and have grown roots to continue watering and fertilizer. If you water and feed them while too small it might rot on you.

Interesting. I got a bunch of seedlings and small back bulbs. They are all potted in loose moss and sitting in fertiliser solution. So far so good.

when you say 'sitting' in a solution, do you mean the loose moss is soaked in a fertilizer solution? I think the growers did that in order that the plants will not dry from shipping. Upon receiving the plant you have to repot it in fresh sphagnum moss and fine fir bark= this work well as potting mixes for these. Let it dry before watering again or you will suffer rot.

Thank you very much Bud. It grows on a palm tree, so I will leave the keikis in this 'natural environment' (at least until they are about 5 inches).

LOL. I think bil did that himself! He is having good success with earlier watering.

Vladimir, do you have a larger new growth which sprouted earlier? Anyway, you have so many new growths the odds are pretty good you will have some survivors. I have a Cycad. Taiwan Gold that keeps making new growths all up and down the old bulbs, so it is not unheard of. It has Mormodes badia as a parent, so maybe it is a mormodes trait.

No fishmom: all of these appeared this year (I got the plant one year ago, and until now it doesn't even have decent roots).

Looks like new growth to me. I wouldn't call those keikis.

Most people use the word "keiki" to refer to a growth that comes from a part of the plant that normally does not produce new growth. When the growth comes from the normal place we don't use the word "keiki."

I feel confused: sorry, I am not an expert. These little plants do NOT come from the base, but from the places where old leaves were attached - exactly as it happens with, for example, Dendrobium nobile. So, what are they - new growth or keikis?
