Fastest from Flask to mature/bloom?
Default Fastest from Flask to mature/bloom?

I'd like to order a second flask (I bought a Brassavola Nodosa over a month ago), but I'm not quite in the mood to wait a decade for some plants. I'd like to keep things in the 3-5 year range until bloom, if that's possible.

Right now, I'm looking at Rhyncholaelia digbyana, Dendrobium spectabile, or Brassavola cucullata. I'm mostly interested in anything fragrant. If anyone has a recommendation for a flask seller, please let me know. Right now I'm mostly looking at Meyers Conservatory and eBay.

Many phalaenopsis will bloom within 3 yrs from flask but most catts are going to take 5-7 yrs. I'm sure there are exceptions...but the ones you are looking at fall into that 5-7 time frame. Some take even longer!

He'll, I've had a Brassavola tuberculata for almost 9 yrs...got at as flaskling...and I'm still waiting for it to bloom.

I have heard Coryanthes can bloom in less than 2 years out of flask. Ask me in about a year.......

The first two you mentioned are not likely to bloom in 5 years from flask. Do some reading; many Phals are that fast, especially the waxy, starry, fragrant jungle hybrids of amboinensis, bellina, violacea and relatives. Use the Search function here in the top maroon menu and search on the term flask to see other members' posts.

There are several species that will bloom in the flask. I think Bernie Butts facebook posted a Catasetum denticulatum blooming in flask not long ago. A quick Google search for "orchid blooming flask" should do the trick.

I guess I'll just have to wait. This week the miniatures don't inspire me. I'll probably change my mind in a month or so. I like to have a bit of everything I think.

I think that Disa uniflora grows quite quickly from seed.

From seed to the time you will receive large seedlings, would be within 1 year, (probably closer to 6 - 8 months), if sown in-vitro.

From the time you deflask the seedlings, it will probably take an additional 1 - 2 years to get them to flowering size.

If grown well, they can persist from offshoots from the mature plant for as long as you can keep them going.

The drawback is that they are quite difficult to cultivate.
