Tiny Dendrobium keiki-Help with a root mystery Male
Default Happy new year! :D

Hello all! I hope you all are having a great start to the new year so far. I just thought I'd update everyone on the current state of the keiki-

A couple of things have happened since my last update-
I've put the keiki in a small plastic box to act as a humidity chamber. It consists of a small pool of water at the bottom of the box with two paper towels standing up to wick the water into the air. There is a small fan to keep the air moving. Both the fan and the keiki are kept elevated above the water. The reservoir is refilled about once a week.
The keiki has pushed out two small growths. They grew for a short while before stalling at the current stage in the pictures.
The keiki has lost both leaves on its original cane. The mother cane is still green (extremely shriveled).
Three roots have grown (including the two seen in my previous update). All three grew a little bit (they are about 1/2cm to 3/4cm in length) before stopping. Fortunately, all three green up with I spray them with water, so I assume they are working properly.
I've added small pieces of sphag to keep the roots moist for a longer period of time. Prior to this the roots would dry up in about 20 minutes after watering despite being inside the chamber. With the added sphag it takes a couple hours before they dry (within 5-7 hours).
Temperatures inside the box range from 65*F to 71*F. Humidity ranges from 75% to 91%.

I am a bit nervous now that the original cane has lost both its leaves. I'm hoping that the plant will be able to take up more water with the sphag keeping the roots moist.
Thanks for all your help so far!

Hi GoldStar135!

The first time I saw this was on a phone. Now that I see it on my desktop monitor, I'm fairly sure you don't have a phal type Dendrobium. I think it's a Den. kingianum or a hybrid of that. There will have been no difference in care to this point, nor for another year or two. Later you will need to treat it differently than a Den. phal to get flowers, but the resuscitation is still the same for now.

The growth should not have lost those two leaves. I think the tiny roots didn't get enough water for the ambient humidity. I think your current setup is a good idea for now, to keep those roots moist. But as they grow into the medium you will need to let it dry out a little between waterings.
