growth of keiki.....
Classified Ad growth of keiki.....

Hello,
Can you tell how and where does the keiki grow on the dendrobium orchid plant.
I am having 3 old cane and no new cane growth is seen.....
But one of the old cane has started to grow a bud which is in just middle of the cane....
So can it be a keiki or a new shoot???
But as per my knowledge new shoot arises from the base......
Only a bit confused
Thank you

Sorry but cannot post a picture, its my 2nd post only

Regards

New canes grow from the base and buds in the middle and top of it. Keikis can grow anywhere, I think. At least this is what happens with the dends I know and it's not uncommon to have buds in older canes.
Probably what you have is a new flower because it's in the place, in the cane, where they grow and also because now this is the time of the year for them to flower.

Welcome, abal4646! We look forward to hearing about growing orchids in India.

Does you plant have soft, flexible leaves that you could bend without damage, or does it have firm leaves that would break if you bent them?

If the leaves are thick, this is probably a Dendrobium phalaenopsis hybrid. Leaves are normally too stiff to bend, but if it has few roots, it may not be able to absorb enough water. Often this kind of Dendrobium begins making new growths up the stem when it is not healthy.

They like regular water and fertilizer all year, and winter night temperatures not much below 15C. They like a growing medium with large chunks, and it is best if they become dry between waterings. You mentioned you may have root rot. This happens when they do not become dry between waterings. Now that it is spring, it will probably begin to grow new roots and a growth from the base.

Also, you now have 5 posts... you can post a photo.
