Green Pod for Dry Seed?
Default Green Pod for Dry Seed?

I have a pod that came on an imported plant, so I do not know how old the Pod is, and when it will dehisce. I want dry seed, so I can store it for later use.

Is it safe to harvest a Green Pod, and place it in a dessication chamber (DampRid, 30%RH) to try to collect dry seed?

Or is it best to keep waiting, hoping to catch the pod cracking to collect dry seed?

Usually in a plant, a pod must be ripe enough before it is cut off, or the seeds won't germinate..

I'm assuming it's the same with orchids.

If you want dry seed, leave it on the plant, but check it every 1-2 days.

When pod starts turning yellow or brown, it is ready to harvest and dry out. Be carefull though, it can go from green to split open in 3-5 days.

Sam take a coffee filter and place it around the pod and staple the coffee filters ends as you fold it over. This will ensure when the pod splits you will have the seeds. The coffee filter will also allow air in as well as some light to. just be careful not to staple the pod itself.

Both of the above methods will work. However I just leave the pod on the plant until it dehisces. The seeds don't "explode" out and have to be scraped out, in my case at the laboratory. This is with paphs, phals, catts and zygo family. You would have to leave the pod outdoors for a week to lose all the seed to wind etc.

OK Thanks for the advice...

I will keep an eye on the color, but if it gets close I will use a coffee filter as suggested to be safe!!!
