I have used the growing medium recipe that they provide; the original source for the recipe is the link to Dokmai gardens that is cited toward the bottom of the AOS article. It works, but I would use slightly less water than they recommend. Orchid seeds germinate just fine on this medium, but I do wonder if some of the pre-formulated media might work better? I don't know. Another thing I might try is using glucose instead of table sugar (glucose = dextrose = "corn sugar" that is sometimes available at beer-making supply companies). Glucose is a simpler sugar, and my thought is that it might be more useable by the young protocorms. The suggestions about the water and the glucose are just suggestions, nothing more than that; the recipe as given does work, but it is a little wetter than I would prefer, and growth slows down a couple months after seeds germinate.
