I received this piece of division. Actually just a bulb, I'm not sure if it's the newest bulb or older one. It's definnately not a back bulb. However it looks to be that the base maybe damaged. How can I tell if any " eyes " will sprout? What is the best way to e courage this? Currently it's just hanging freely in my greenhouse as pictured.
The base is damaged so won't grow from there, however it's a dendrobium so can produce keikis. Do as I have in the pic below. Use tissue to keep moist, put lid on and keep humid, then just wait.
Great ! So do you suggest I cut my piece up or leave intact? What about the top leaves that's still attached on top. Do you by chance know what type of Dendrobium?

You can cut it into pieces making sure each section has a node, however that does provide more areas of ingress for possible pathogenic fungi and bacteria. I would leave it whole if you can.
You could lay the cane on a bed of damp (not wet) vermiculite or sphag. Enclose the entire kit and caboodle in a large clear inflated plastic bag. Place in a warm, brightly light (but no direct sun) area. Open the bag once a week or so to freshen the air and check on the moisture of the media.

Would think that highly unlikely. No way to contact the source of the cane?
