I used to use a keiki grow paste on all my favorite Dendrobiums and a few other genera too.
The reason I used it was to accelerate the growth of the orchids into specimen sized plants.
Instead of getting only one or two new growths beginning at each growing season, I could get several to start growing by treating dormant nodes at the base of existing PB's. After only 2 or 3 years of treatment, I would have a large many PB'd plant going. I am guilty of blossom greed and instant gratification. The more new PB's you've got going, the more blossoms you'll get from them, if grown well. After 3 or 4 years I needed buckets to hold a few of them. I have a new batch of keiki paste and I'm ready for the new growing season to begin.
EDIT:
OK, buckets may be an over statement. But, my Dendrobium section Dendrobiums did grow more new PB's than if not treated and I obtained larger [more PB's and blossoms] plants quicker than I would have if I had not treated them. I was not trying to treat nodes that should have produced blossoms, just dormant new growth nodes at the base of the PB's.
